Redistribution of Wealth (school grades)

A young woman was just about to finish up her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, she was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs. In other words, redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a staunch Conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. She shared with her father that she felt that many of the topics she and her professor went over were true. But he father interrupted her to ask how she was doing in school.

She responded that she was doing very well. She had earned a 4.0 GPA throughout her first year.

Asked how she came to achieve such high marks, the young woman said she made school a priority and worked very hard to do so. She managed her time well, did her homework and studied when she needed to, and did not spend an excess of time goofing off or partying.

The father asked how one of her friends Mary was doing in school.

The young woman responded that Mary was doing terribly and had only earned a 2.0 GPA. After being asked why, the young woman said that Mary just wasn’t working as hard, she was out partying most nights, and made very little effort to manage her time and make school a priority.

Her father then asked her, “Well, why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him if he could deduct a point off of your GPA and add that to Mary’s, that way both of you will have a 3.0 GPA?”

The daughter, visibly shocked by the suggestion, responded, “That’s a crazy idea! I worked hard for my grades while Mary has been messing around. I deserve my grades after all the hard work I have put in!”

The father slowly smiled, winked, and said, “Welcome to the conservative’s philosophy.”
